Re: James Tomkins
I like James as a person but he wasn't a great defender. I think there are way too many sentimental delusions about him. We got good money for him and he was on good wedge at West Ham for his ability. He's been pretty poor at Palace when he can get in their side IMO.
I wish people would stop dredging up these lame excuses for our poor form.
There are clearly some off field issues which the board need to act on. West Ham shouldn't be a side that surrenders regardless of the players quality.

Hasn't been tearing up too many trees for Palace , was described as lacking the physical presence required of a premiership central defender st the weekend

It's all just a shameful shambles from the top down.

Non league clubs are run better.

Would he have improved our defence this season, simply yes.

pdbis 2:06 Sat Jan 7
Re: James Tomkins
Would of had him as first choice over both Ogbonna & Collins every time.

Re: James Tomkins
I think Reid and Ogbonna have been pretty terrible this season, Ogbonna in utterly hideous form at times. But I still think we were right to sell Tomkins - you can't just hang on to players all the time, the squad needs to develop, we need more of this not less.

Re: James Tomkins
vexed is right.

should have bought a proper right back. centre half has actually not be a massive issue this year with reid good and ogbonna and kouyate decent. the defensive capabilities either side, plus centre mid, have been the cause of our poor defensive play.

Vexed is spot on

Re: James Tomkins
You're so clueless Vexed it's unreal.

Tomkins was a very good center back, he was never a right back but done a very good job there as well. £10m for a player of his ability and experience is a steal and it's no coincidence since his departure we've been shaky at the back.

Vexed 10:06 Sat Jan 7
Re: James Tomkins
Tomkins was an average to poor centre back who wanted more playing time. It wasn't a big deal that we sold him, it was a big deal that we didn't get a competent right back in. You planks getting all misty eyed because he was an academy product have conveniently forgotten what a liability he was at times. Hence he ended up at a shithouse club like palace. Now can we stop going on about this and just sack Bilic?

Where the fucking fuck is fucking BYRAM?

Nicey 9:40 Sat Jan 7
Re: James Tomkins
The number one reason he was sold was his representation.

Carroll is in the shop window for this very reason but it is unlikely anyone will come in for him due to his deal and injury record.

The club are trying to remove all links to potential problems

Alex Bunbury 9:23 Sat Jan 7
Re: James Tomkins
Not sure it is Sullivan's fault we sold Tomkins and went into the season with only Byram as a recognised right back. What happened to Arbeloa?

The Hammers 9:18 Sat Jan 7
Re: James Tomkins
still no proper replacement for Tomkins

Nordtveit is not a right back.

Re: James Tomkins
Well done Sully you great big fat cunt.

Sell a superb West Ham Accadamy CB who played most of last season very well at RB and end up the following season with battering after battering whilst Rabbit in Headlights is left having to play an average defensive midfielder at right back against one of the best sides in Europe.

Great business Sully. Keep it up.

You should promote yourself to manager (officially) and your son as your assistant. He could wear his Football Manager 2017 cap on the touchline and go live on Facebook.

Reid is on a big deal now though. What was it, someting like 65k pw for 5 or 6 years wasn't it?

The way I understand it is Bilic had a chat with Collins and explained at the present time he was going to be behind the other 3 so his chances maybe limited and he would understand at this stage of his career if Collins wanted first team football he wouldn't stand in his way if he wanted to leave but was more than happy to have him in the squad and Collins wanted to stay and fight for his place.

On Ogbonna, after reviewing the games last season Bilic come to the conclusion we conceded goals when attackers got between our left back and central defender because the 3 we had are all right footed, so a right footed defender was always playing on the left, Reid mostly.

That's why EVERY centre back we went for was left footed.

Still what does Bilic know compared to Alex V?

Re: James Tomkins
Best defender at the club. Hasn't put a foot wrong wherever played. Said he was up for the challenge and has lived up to it. Newcastle were not great but had more of a go on our right when Tomkins moved to CB.

Re: James Tomkins
FCJ ~ Would agree with that. Tomkins hasn't put a foot wrong since he came back from his suspension following the Euro red

Noble has also improved with the competition for places (despite several misplaced passes last night) He seems to have learnt from Payet as well. I counted him do that Payet body swerve at least 3 times last night. Also he seems a bit more aware of the players around him

Full Claret Jacket 8:13 Tue Sep 15
Re: James Tomkins
I think the genuine competition for places has made Tomkins better. Been really good last couple of games. Quick in the tackle and more focused.
Great to see.

>>> Lee Trundle 7:45 Tue Sep 15

There are worse problems to have, agreed. But in the era of 25-man squad limitations, and also the sheer cost of bringing in major players, I don't think it's irrelevant either. Every player you buy that you don't really need is an opportunity missed elsewhere in the squad, and a misallocation of resources that are so crucial in this competitive era.
